The Crimean War ended when peace terms were agreed upon on February 1, 1856, in Vienna, which resulted in the Treaty of Paris. The capture of Sevastopol, a city located on the Black Sea, was the last significant fighting in the war.

Russia lost her foothold in the Balkans and finally agreed to respect the integrity of the Ottoman Empire. Austria lost Russia as her ally, and over the next few years, Britain and France were also not interested in supporting the small country. In 1866, the Austro-Prussian War ended the Austrian influence in Germany, and Tsar Alexander realized the urgent need for modernization in Russia.
