When did the first Madden game come out?

The first Madden football video game was released in 1988 for the Commodore 64, Commodore 128, Apple II and MS-DOS platforms. The original game took 3 years to build, and it had no real NFL teams due to licensing issues.

Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins came up with the concept for a computer football game. He approached CBS announcer and retired coach John Madden, who originally agreed to help so that the game could serve as a teaching tool. Madden wanted it to be realistic, so the first release had 11 players on each team. It allowed gamers to change the weather conditions, and it had a standard pro playbook. As of 2014, Madden continues to help with the game's development.
