The first iPod came out in October 2001. When it first hit the market, the 5-gigabyte first-generation iPod cost $399. In March 2002, a 10-gigabyte iPod model was released and sold for $499.
According to Apple, the first iPod ran on an iPod operating system version 1.0. Its central processing unit speed was dual 90 megahertz embedded. The device weighed just 0.41 pound and was 4.02 inches high, 2.43 inches wide and 0.78 inch deep.
First-generation iPods were produced until April 2003, when the model was replaced by a newer, updated version with a dock connector, allowing an iPod to connect to a Mac or a PC.
