The Fortune 500 list, an annual list compiled by Fortune Magazine listing the top 500 U.S.-based public and closely held companies measured by gross revenue, began in 1955. As of 2013, 57 companies have been on the list every year since it began, according to Fortune magazine.
The original Fortune 500 list was restricted to companies with revenues from manufacturing, energy exploration or mining but was changed to include service companies in 1994. Companies are ranked according to total revenue during their fiscal year and are only eligible for the list if they are incorporated, operate in the U.S., are not a subsidiary and file financial statements with a government agency, explains Fortune magazine.
