What did Galileo wear?

Portraits of Galileo Galilei show him wearing a dark-colored doublet or jacket over a shirt with a wide, flat collar. His clothing reflects European men's fashions in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Galileo was born in 1564 and died in 1642. During his lifetime, most men of the middle and upper classes wore a close-cut padded jacket over a linen shirt with deep cuffs. They also wore knee breeches that were fastened to their doublets by laces or ties and were worn with knee-length stockings. Short cloaks or capes were worn except in inclement weather, when longer cloaks were worn. Men also wore hats with a tall crown and shoes cut with a tongue.
