Max and Morris Grabowsky established the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1902 in Pontiac, Michigan, specializing in one-ton trucks. In 1905, the company was acquired by Harry Hamilton and Albert North, who released the first Pontiac automobile that same year.

Under the leadership of Hamilton and North, Rapid Motor Vehicle Company produced a variety of passenger vehicles for commercial use. In 1909, General Motors Company - one of the largest car manufacturers in the world - purchased Rapid. The signature Rapid truck developed by the Grabowsys became officially branded as part of the GMC Truck division at the New York Auto Show in 1912.
