Where did Hebrew monotheism start?

Hebrew monotheism began in the biblical lands of Judah and the Northern Kingdom sometime between 1,000 and 586 B.C. The idea of a single god was imparted to Abraham at the biblical Mount Sinai. Judah centered around modern-day Jerusalem, while the Northern Kingdom encompassed parts of modern-day Israel.

The first practitioner of Hebrew monotheism, the belief in a sole god, was the biblical character Abraham. The story of the origins of Hebrew monotheism is recounted in the biblical book of Genesis, which describes a dialogue between Abraham and God. Monotheism diverged from polytheistic and idolatry practices in the region by such groups as the Assyrians, Egyptians and Babylonians.
