Hollywood Video, a VHS, DVD and video game rental chain, ceased operations in May 2010, and its last U.S. store closed on July 31, 2010. Started in 1988, Hollywood Video was once the largest direct competitor to Blockbuster Video.

Hollywood Video became a publicly traded company in 1993 and continued to grow until it had opened more than 2,000 stores. In 2005, Hollywood Video was purchased by Movie Gallery, a competing chain founded in Dothan, Alabama, in 1985. Movie Gallery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2010, and the last Canadian Hollywood Video location ceased operations on Aug. 8, 2010.
