When did Japan surrender in World War II?

Japan surrendered on Sept. 2, 1945. This surrender came shortly after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9 respectively.

Before the official surrender, there were moves for peace by Japan's leaders, Emperor Hirohito and Prime Minister Suzuki. Although there was an attempted military coup on August 15, the Emperor announced surrender the same day over radio. The official surrender ceremony, where two influential members of the Japanese government and military Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu, provided their signatures happened on September 2 in Tokyo Bay. During this ceremony, several international figures signed documents to cement the unconditional surrender despite controversy surrounding the terms.
