World War II officially ended on August 15, 1945. In Europe, the war ended on May 8, 1945 after Adolf Hitler committed suicide, but it was not until August that Japan officially surrendered
Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain, announced VE-Day in Europe, but while countries in Europe were celebrating the death of Hitler, Japan continued to fight. During August two Atomic bombs were dropped on the country by the United States after Japan refused to surrender despite the fact that Germany had surrendered. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to the emperor Hirohito agreeing to finally surrender on August 15, 1945.
