Jose de San Martin was a famous military leader who fought against Spanish rule in the countries of Argentina, Chile and Peru. He is considered a national hero and founding father in Argentina and is referred to as the “Liberator."
Jose de San Martin was born in Argentina in 1778. In 1808, he joined the Spanish army to fight against Napoleon in Europe. After his return to Argentina in 1812, he began the fight against Spain (Royalists) for his country’s independence. After achieving this goal, Jose de San Martin helped secure Chile’s independence in 1818 and Peru’s independence in 1821. In 1824, he left South America and subsequently died in 1850 in France.
