Julius Caesar likely wore both a tunic and a toga. In ancient Rome clothing was a display of status within the hierarchy. Since Julius Caesar rose to power as a dictator, his attire was likely extravagant and made from expensive linen.
Tunics were worn under togas and were typically made of wool. According to an historian named Suetonius, Julius Caesar wore a long-sleeved tunic under his toga, which was perhaps unusual because long sleeves on tunics were considered effeminate. Togas were bulky robes and were meant as a display garment.
There were many different types of togas, some more decorated than others to display social status. Togas were white in color and worn in a draped fashion around the body.
