The Los Angeles Lakers moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1960 during the NBA off-season. The move made the Lakers the inaugural West Coast team in the NBA. The decision was made by presiding owner, Bob Short, in an effort to counteract the declining level of supporter attendance.
Preceding the move, the Los Angeles Lakers were known as the Minneapolis Lakers. The "Lakers" name originated as an honorary term to the state of Minneapolis' nickname: Land of 10,000 Lakes. The franchise started in 1947 with the acquisition of the disbanded Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League. As of 2014, the Lakers play their home games at Staples Center.
