The Lakers got their nickname from the state of Minnesota, where they began their operations in 1947. The team adopted the name due to the many lakes in the state.
When the Minneapolis Lakers moved to Los Angeles in 1960, the team owners decided to keep the nickname even though it applied to the team's old home state of Minnesota. The franchise has been one of the most successful NBA teams in the league's history. As of 2014, the Lakers have won a total of 16 NBA championships and have produced many star players, including Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant.
