How did tree frogs get their name?

Tree frogs are different species of frogs that spend most of their lifespans on trees. They have evolved in such a way that they rarely, if ever, need to leave their arboreal state.
While some species of tree frogs do not live on trees, the common feature across all tree frog species are the feet, which have evolved into claws and special pads to allow clinging to trees and leaves and climbing across vegetation. So, even if a frog is living in a pond or in grass, it can still be classified as a tree frog if it has the features that allow it to have a permanent or semi-permanent arboreal state.
