What did the Lakota live in?

Prior to what is referred to as modern civilization, the Lakota lived in homes that resembled tall tents made of buffalo hide called tipis. Tipis were originally approximately 12 feet high, but after the introduction of horses into Lakota culture, the homes doubled in size.

Around 10 to 15 wooden poles were used to hold up each tipi. To let smoke from their fire out, a hole was left in the top of the tipi, which also served to cycle in fresh air. The tipis' construction allowed the Lakota to take them down quickly so that an entire village could be packed and ready to move within an hour. The Lakota now live in modern homes on and off reservations.
