The Minotaur lived in Crete, the Greek island at the center of Minoan civilization, according to mythology. Specifically, it lived in a labyrinth near the palace at Knossos. The minotaur was a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man.
The Minotaur was a ferocious man-eater, and the labyrinth it lived in was built on order of its stepfather, Minos, the king of Crete. There, young men and women were sacrificed to the Minotaur on a regular basis. The hero Theseus volunteered to slay the monster and was helped in his task by the king's daughter Ariadne. She gave him a ball of thread to help him navigate his way out of the labyrinth.
