Michelangelo lived most of his life in Rome, Italy, where he died in 1564 at the age of 88. He was born in 1475 in Caprese, which is near Florence, Italy. However, his family moved to Florence soon after his birth.
In Florence, Michelangelo lived with the family of Lorenzo de' Medici until they were expelled from the city. He then moved to Bologna, and then to Rome in 1496, where he became known as a sculpture, producing such works as the "Pieta." He then moved back to Florence, and from 1501 to 1504, he produced his Renaissance sculpture masterpiece, "David." Michelangelo later returned to Rome again, where he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City between 1508 to 1512.
