Lego Star Wars become popular in 1999 when the first episode of the Star Wars movie prequel trilogy, "The Phantom Menace", was released. The Lego Star Wars franchise has continued to grow in popularity, prompting Lego to extend their license to 2022.

Although the release of Lego Star Wars coincided with the release of "The Phantom Menace", the first Lego Star Wars set, an X-Wing Fighter, was based on the original trilogy. The 263 piece set came with Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Biggs Darklighter and the Rebel Mechanic. The X-Wing Fighter set included a short comic showing Skywalker's crash on Dagobah.
