Lewis and Clark crossed the Continental Divide through the Lemhi Pass that is located in modern day Montana and near the Sacajawea Memorial Camp that is set up in the state. The group made the crossing here in 1805 and continued by both canoe and foot until they reached the west coast.
Once they crossed the divide, they continued on to Fort Clatsop on the Oregon coast. The group stayed the winter there before returning to St. Louis. It had taken the group a little less than 2 years to reach the fort, but it only took around 7 months to get back home with the route now known to them, which made for easier travel.
