Lise Meitner, an Austrian physicist, was part of a group that discovered nuclear fission. Together with Otto Hahn and Otto Frisch, she published this discovery in 1938. She also discovered the Auger effect, an emission process, in 1922.
Lise Meitner studied at the University of Vienna and received her doctorate degree in physics in 1906. She was the second woman to obtain such a degree at the university. She became the first female physics professor in Germany in 1926, at the University of Berlin. Meitner was born in 1878 in Vienna, Austria, and died in 1968 in Cambridge, England, at the age of 89.
