Martin Luther King Jr. grew up on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Ga. He was born on January 15, 1929, in the house at 501 Auburn Avenue that his parents and grandparents shared, and he lived in that house until he was 12 years old.
King continued to live in Atlanta even after his family left their first home. He attended Booker T. Washington High School and graduated from Atlanta's Morehouse College. King had an older sister and a younger brother. Though he eventually left Atlanta for more education and to pastor a church in Montgomery, Ala., he returned to Atlanta in 1960 to co-pastor Ebenezer Baptist Church with his father and to continue his work in civil rights.
