Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott got married on June 8, 1953, in Marion, Ala., at Coretta's parents' house. Martin's father, Reverend King, conducted the ceremony. Coretta's sister, Edith, was the maid of honor and Martin's brother, Reverend A.D. King, was the best man.
Martin and Coretta met in Boston in 1952 after being introduced by a friend. Martin had a previous serious relationship while studying at Coziers Seminary with a Caucasian woman, but the relationship was terminated due to perceived concerns about interracial relationship difficulties. Martin was born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga., and Coretta was born on April 27, 1927, in Heiberger, Ala.
