The Maryland State Archives notes that Maryland became a royal colony in 1692 after the English monarchy declared it as such. Sir Lionel Copley became Governor, having been appointed by England's joint monarchs, William III and Mary II.
A historical chronology published by the Maryland State Archives states that crown rule in Maryland persisted from April 1692 through 1715. According to the chronology, crown rule followed an interim period that saw the state ruled by Protestant Associators between May 1690 and April 1692. The Protestant Associators had succeeded in overthrowing the proprietary officers who had previously ruled the state during the 1689 Maryland Revolution.
