As of June 2014, Mt. Erebus last erupted on Oct. 9, 2013. The volcano had been quiet prior to that since the last major eruption took place in 2007. In 2005, there was a series of small-to-medium eruptions that lasted for a week.

Mt. Erebus is Earth's southernmost active volcano. It is a stratovolcano and covered in glaciers. Standing approximately 3,794 meters above sea level, this volcano is the largest of three active volcanoes that sit on Ross Island in Antarctica. The volcano was discovered during an eruption by explorer James Ross in 1841. The island also houses the McMurdo research station, which has been monitoring Mt. Erebus' eruption characteristics since 1972.
