Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, in March of 2010, according to Wikipedia. President Barack Obama signed it into law on March 23, 2010.
The legislation allows young adults to stay on their parents' insurance plans until age 26, eliminates lifetime limits on coverage, and covers preventive care at no cost, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. It also requires all citizens to obtain health insurance coverage either through private insurers or public programs. The Supreme Court heard a challenge to the individual mandate provision of the law in 2012 and subsequently upheld it as constitutional, Wikipedia reports.
