The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare, was passed in the U.S. Senate by a vote of 60 to 39. The U.S. House of Representatives, using a process known as reconciliation, approved the Senate bill by a vote of 219 to 212.
The bill and the controversial legislative procedure used to pass it in the House were the subject of intense scrutiny and debate. The votes in both the House and Senate fell closely along party lines, with no Republicans in either legislative body voting "Yes." The bill was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010.
