Garlic extracts were a popular treatment for warts before modern medicine, according to An Armamentarium of Wart Treatments by Michelle M. Lipke. The article suggests that the treatment may actually be valid, as garlic has anti-viral properties.
Lipke's work also lists some popular superstitions involving warts. One calls for rubbing a dusty, dry toad on the wart. She explains that warts often fall off spontaneously, which may have led people to believe that such folkloric treatments actually worked.
According to the same article, duct tape followed by scrubbing the wart with a pumice is another traditional cure that has regained popularity.
