Pierre Curie was killed in an accident on April 19, 1906 in Paris. Curie was a French physicist who spent his career studying materials that are radioactive.
Curie and his wife Marie together discovered polonium and radium in 1898. They were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for their study of a form of radiation discovered by another researcher, Antoine Henri Becquerel, who also shared the prize.
Pierre and Marie received the Davy Medal of the Royal Society of London in 1903. Pierre was elected in 1905 to the Academy of Sciences. Their research helped lay the groundwork for the study of chemistry and nuclear physics in the 20th century.
