Poverty stricken families living during the Victorian Era likely lived in crowded, unkempt, slum houses, or were homeless, endured poor sanitary conditions and often were forced to subject their children to work in harsh conditions. This was especially common in big cities like London, where the rapid population growths mirrored the economic growth of the Industrial Revolution, as stated by Hidden Lives Revealed.

The Victorian Era produced what were called the Victorian slums in cities across England, namely London, and they were often associated with vice, according to The Victorian Web. Although the disparity levels differed among the slums, they were generally overcrowded, dirty and were considered areas of extreme poverty.
