Postmodernism, a movement of the late 20th century, was first called by that name in 1979 by French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. He noted a change of approach in the worlds of science, art and literature.
The postmodernist movement embraces much of the free nature of modernism but does so in a different way. The fragmented approaches to art and literature seen in modernism were considered indications of the wounds within a suffering people, while postmodernism accepted the fragmentation as something to be acclaimed. Over time, technological advances have made a large impact on the postmodernist movement with a heightened focus on technology's impact on global issues.
