The Pop Art movement began in the mid-1950s using the world of consumerism. Pop artists used items found in everyday life as well as the emergence of mass media to inspire their works. The movement's most influential years lasted until the 1970s.
Two of the most important Pop artists of the movement were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Their works connected traditional art with television, advertisements and films of the day. Their works contained irony and humor and focused on realism and images of everyday life, especially items manufactured after World War II. Pop artists came from the world of commercial art, as many of its leaders spent time in advertising and graphic design.
