Pterodactyls lived in Europe, Australia, North America and Africa; many pterodactyl fossils have been found in the Bavarian region in Germany. During the Jurassic Period, when the pterodactyl lived, Bavaria was a wetland. When the animal died, it sank into the mud and was fossilized over the millennia.
The pterodactyl, whose formal name is pterodactylus, was a small flying reptile that had a wingspan a little over or under 2 feet. It was related to other flying reptiles such as pteranodon, dsungaripterus and the very large quetzalcoatlus.
Like a bird, pterodactylus had hollow bones and good eyesight. However, it also had teeth. This helped the animal catch fish and other prey.
