Pterodactyl is a term used to classify a group of flying reptiles that existed in a variety of sizes; with wingspans ranging from a few inches to over 40 feet. Thus height depends on which pterodactyl is in question.
This group of winged dinosaurs is called "pterosaurs." The Pterodactylus was the first known pterosaur to be named. Its fossils were discovered in 1784 by Italian scientist Cosimo Collini. The estimated wingspan of an adult pterodactylus is just over 1 meter (41 inches). The Pteranodon is the most popular winged dinosaur, commonly seen in movies and television, with a height of approximately 6 feet (1.83 meters) and a wingspan of 18 feet (5.6 meters).
