Robert Hooke studied at Wadham College, one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Hooke discovered the law of elasticity, which eventually became known as Hooke's law. He was also among the first to advocate for a theory of evolution.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica states that Hooke became a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1663; the Royal Society appointed him as curator of experiments one year earlier. By 1665, Hooke became a professor of geometry in Gresham College. In addition to his discovery of the law of elasticity, Hooke was the first person to discover diffraction. He explained the phenomenon using the wave theory of light.
