Where did Roman soldiers live?

Due to the vast expansion and mobile tendencies of the Roman empire, soldiers were housed in leather tents, often occupied by up to eight men. These structures were broken down and moved as needed along the journey. Each soldier carried two stakes and tools for digging to set up camp.
Mules were employed to carry the rolled tent. Slave labor was also used. The Roman army was funded by the state, which provided supplies and other expenditures. The Roman army began as a part-time haven for farmers and other citizens but evolved into a salaried organization for long-term service by offering the poorest citizens a chance at military service and pay.
