The brown marmolated stink bug came to the country from southeast Asia. It is believed the bug sought refuge on a cargo ship transporting goods to the United States.
The stink bug was first collected in Allentown, Pa. in September 1998, though it is believed to have arrived years earlier. The range of the bug has expanded to include at least 33 states, with estimates that the agricultural pest was responsible for up to $37 million in damages to apple crops in 2010. According to the USDA, areas infiltrated by the species are at risk for losses up to $21 billion in crops.
