When did the Syfy channel change its name from Sci-Fi?

The American cable channel SCI FI changed its name to Syfy on July 7, 2009. Mitchell Rubenstein and Laurie Silvers created the concept for the channel in 1989. The channel, owned by NBCUniversal Cable, launched on Sept. 24, 1992, under the name Sci-Fi Channel.

In an interview with Blastr.com, Syfy's president Dave Howe said that the name was changed to Syfy so that the channel sounded more cutting edge, so that the channel could expand into other genres, and because it was impossible to trademark anything under the name SCI FI. Some of Syfy's popular shows are "Ghost Hunters," "Continuum," "Haven," "Face Off" and "Defiance," as of 2015.
