Where did Tyndall AFB get its name?

Tyndall Air Force Base was named after Lieutenant Francis B. Tyndall, a World War I fighter pilot who died in a plane crash in 1930. The name was suggested by Congressman Robert Sikes, and the War Department officially named the newly built Tyndall Field in 1941.

Originally designated as a gunnery training installation, Tyndall Field was a training center during World War II. the base is located near Panama City, Florida.

As of 2015, Tyndall Air Force Base is an Air Education and Training Command installation. The training program for the F-22A Raptor combat aircraft is centered at Tyndall Air Force Base.
