When did Vermont become a state?

Vermont officially became a state on March 4, 1791. Prior to this, it had been an independent republic for 14 years. The area was first colonized by French and English settlers in the early 1700s.

Vermont was the 14th state admitted into the Union and is one of the smallest states in the country, with a total area of 9,616 square miles. As of 2010, the state had just over 625,000 citizens. In 2000, it made history by becoming the first state to legally recognize civil unions between same-sex partners. The state was also the site of one of the first ski lifts in the country in 1934.
