World War I ended on June 28, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The four primary empires that collapsed as a result of WWI were the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian and German empires. The end of WWI witnessed 13 million lives lost and unprecedented damage.
On Nov. 11, 1918, all nations agreed to cease conflict while terms for peace were negotiated. During this time, mutiny was occurring in Germany, and on Nov. 11, 1918, Germany formally surrendered. After the Allied nations and Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, the war was over. The treaty required Germany to accept responsibility for starting the war, surrender territory to other countries, and limit the size of its military.
