Do diet pills work?

Some diet pills have been shown to help in obesity treatment, combined with a healthy diet and exercise. Over-the-counter medicines are typically not very effective in weight loss. Some herbal remedies have shown slight weight loss results in studies, although many have harmful side effects.
As of 2014, only two prescription drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for long-term weight loss, and only for those who are significantly obese. Sibutramine is a prescription medication that works by increasing metabolism and affecting serotonin. Orlistat has helped users achieve mild weight loss by blocking an enzyme that breaks down fat.
