What is the difference between crimes and civil wrongs?

A crime is a charge by the state or federal government on behalf of its citizens against a person accused of violating the law while a civil wrong is wrongdoing that causes damages and thus requires compensation or repayment. A crime falls under criminal law while a civil wrong is addressed under the civil law.

For civil wrongs, both the government and citizens are allowed to bring a civil action against the offenders. Common example of civil wrongs includes property disputes, torts and contract matters. The criminal law serves to prevent offenses while the civil law ensures that a person receives fair compensation.
