What is the difference between a raisin and a sultana?

Raisins and sultanas are both dried grapes, but sultanas are from seedless grapes. Sultanas are a lighter color and tend to be larger, juicier and sweeter than raisins. Sultanas are also known as Golden Raisins.

The grapes used to make raisins are usually Moscatel. Both dried fruits are often used in British cooking, especially cakes and puddings. A third type of dried fruit, currants, are also frequently used. Currants are dark red in color and also come from seedless grapes. They were originally cultivated in Greece, and their name comes from the ancient city of Corinth. They are also known as Zante currants.
