What is the difference between democracy and totalitarianism?

Totalitarianism is a form of government where the state has total power, but in a democracy, the people of a country (or region) vote to elect leaders who act on their behalf. A totalitarianism government typically has a dictator that leads it, like Benito Mussolini in Italy during World War II.

Democracy is the most common form of government in the modern era. Its design and intention is to give every voter the same amount of power, specifically giving them power to elect officials that will change laws and make decisions that reflect their preferences as a group.
