A village is a settlement usually located in a rural region and is smaller than a town, while a hamlet is a settlement that is much smaller than a village. Hamlets can be found in rural regions or municipalities.

Villages are generally believed to play host to more than 500 people. A hamlet, on the other hand, is said to be inhabited by less than 100 people. Villages are characterized by concentration of buildings in a central place or in a linear pattern around a river, church or any other public space, while hamlets are typically found in unincorporated communities.
