What is the difference between a hog and a pig?

The word "hog" refers to all animals known as swine while a "pig" is a young animal, according to America's Heartland. The Environmental Protection Agency concurs with this definition as it is used in the agricultural practices of American farmers.

The total number of hogs in the nation numbers 60 million. Pork meat represents one-fourth of all meat consumption in the United States. Iowa is the largest pork-producing state, and approximately 68 percent of all swine herds are located in the region known as the Corn Belt. Pigs in these areas are raised for consumption in indoor barns and in open pastures.
