What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

HTTP and HTTPS are two types of Internet communication protocols. HTTPS is the encrypted version of the HTTP protocol that utilizes the Secure Socket Layer.

HTTP sends, receives and arranges Web data for users. It does not manage where or even if data is sent.

HTTPS is very similar to plain HTTP except that it differentiates senders and receivers of data. It also encrypts data using the Secure Socket Layer to prevent the data from being intercepted and read or modified. HTTPS uses certificates to identify trusted websites that are safe to interact with and block ones that are not.
