What is the purpose of HTTP?

HTTP, or hypertext transfer protocol, is a means to transfer secure data across the Internet. HTTP is set of rules used for transferring files on the web.

When you open your browser you are indirectly using HTTP. When you type a link into the address bar and press enter, you've sent a request to transfer some form of data (text, graphic images, sound, video, and other multimedia files) on the World Wide Web to your screen. This is the basic process of HTTP. HTTPS is used to secure personal data - it is encrypted, and will be seen from the outside as unidentifiable symbols until it reaches it destination. HTTP and HTTPS are the means by which data gets translated and transferred across the web.
