While both miles and kilometers are units used to measure distance, miles are part of the imperial system of measurement, and kilometers are part of the metric system of measurement. The only country to use the imperial system, and thus miles, as the official distance measure is the United States.
It is possible to convert between kilometers and miles by using either the measure of 1 kilometer equal to 0.62 miles, or 1 mile equals 1.60 kilometers. Other units of distance in the metric system are related to the kilometer in multiples of 10. Other units of distance in the imperial system include yards, feet and inches. A value of 1 mile is equal to 1,760 yards.
